the beauty of the poised heron snatching
life
from salmon fry.

the summer day glittering
basking waters
hazy mountains,
crickets applauding in mid-air,

the dead, the ugly and the suffering are here too.

in some mysterious way the two are one.

a smooth oyster shell, brilliant white,
decorates the shoreline long after the oyster has been
consumed.

everything on earth is food for something else.
